GHOSTPOET – CASH AND CARRY ME HOME

Tinie Tempah in a k-hole, imagine that and you are kind of there. I don’t actually think this track is out until next year officially, but its been bouncing around the internet all year. This is such an unshakeably British record, by such an unshakeably British artist. You can’t really imagine a record like this coming from any other country in the world – you might get a delivery like Ghostpoet’s on a track from somewhere in the West Indies, but teemed with a bassline like this, no way.

The bassline to this track is incredible. It somehow manages to be minimal, dirty and extremely danceable all the same time. Take away the vocal track over the top of it, this could easily be a big dance track in clubland (if not in the charts) – I’m thinking Township Funk by DJ Mujava style. Its incredibly hypnotic despite being extremely repetitive, combined with the drum track it really works, and you can actually dance to it – maybe not myself, but you can definitely imagine a few body-con girls slutting it up to this beat.

Ghostpoet’s delivery is crucial to this track. His slurry rap/sing/talky style is pretty unique to him, and it really gives the track on top of the bassline some character and a reason to keep listening. I really like his voice actually, it reminds me a bit of Massive Attack fave Horace Andy, or long forgotten late 90’s Brit rapper Me One. Its extremely deep, and the way he slurs his words (its not just unique to this track) could get irritating, but its something a bit different, and gives on this track – which could have been wasted with any generic dubstep /grime/UK hip hop rapper over the top of it – a bit of depth.

Top tune, I’m interested to see where he goes in 2011. For quite a simple concept the video for this song is pretty awesome too –
